I am excited to share a story that is close to my heart not only as your Councilman, but as an educator. Last year, the principal at Fay Herron Elementary School reached out to me with a concern of safety for her students due to their school field being adjacent to the flood channel. Because of this, the students were often exposed to homeless individuals that sometimes gather in the flood channel. The principal asked for funding to install fence slats that would block the sight between the school field and the flood channel.
I reached out to our Community Services and Engagement team to rectify this situation. Immediately, the team jumped into action and secured funds through community partners, with one in particular being Crystal Hirschi with Hirschi Masonry. Crystal purchased the slats, and also had her employees and family members participate in the installation. Additionally, Crystal paid to finish the REST of the school, and fixed holes that she noticed in the block wall!
This was a HUGE effort, and I am so pleased with the Hirschi Team, our Community Services and Engagement Team and the team at Fay Herron Elementary School for working together to put the safety of our children first. This is really what the definition of being a community means.
